Yes, it can—but it depends on how you approach it. An affair is a huge rupture of trust, and there’s no magic wand to make that pain disappear. What therapy gives you is a safe structure where both partners can talk honestly about what’s happened, and crucially, where the hurt partner can be listened to and understood—fully, and often more than once.
The partner who had the affair has to be willing to take responsibility, answer difficult questions, and show up consistently over time. The hurt partner needs space to express the depth of their feelings without being shut down or rushed. When both of you can do that with support, healing becomes possible.
So, does therapy work? Yes—when you use it to slow down, really listen to each other, and start rebuilding trust step by step. Many couples I work with not only recover from an affair but go on to create a relationship that feels more open, more honest, and more connected than the one they had before.
Whatever reason you're looking for couples therapy, we will chat about what your struggles are right now, and what has led up to them. I will offer my thoughts on how to move forward, with or without my support. You will come away with a larger perspective on your situation, and some actionable next steps.
If you are in the Harrogate, Ilkley or Leeds area, I offer weekly or fortnightly couples therapy in-person in Harrogate or in Otley, or online via Zoom. I offer a free 15-minute consultation over Zoom or the phone, during which you'll get a feel for what it's like to work with me. I can assess your needs and work out if we're a good fit for weekly or fortnightly sessions.
I work with couples who want a fundamental and long-lasting change in the way they relate to one another. If you want to put a short-term sticking plaster on your relationship, I'm probably not the therapist for you.
